INTRODUCTION The media is a powerful actor in terrorism. How important the media are during terrorist incidents is a matter of constant discussion (Atwater, 1987; Jenkins, 2003). Understanding the connections between terrorism and the media needs to be identified through a broader analysis of; the power of the media (Shaw and McCombs, 1972), especially in difficult situations (Arno, 1984); the way journalists, editors, authorities and terrorists relate to each other; empirically analyze the media; and the link between terrorism and public opinion. Since the early 1970s, researchers have examined the role of the media in relation to terrorism and discovered how the media interacts with terrorists. THE TERRORIST AND THE USE OF THE MEDIA Many terrorist groups or organizations are very aware and able to understand the feelings of others regarding news timing and audience dynamics, so they structure their actions accordingly (Weimann and Winn, 1994) . Several examples include; the Westgate bombing in Kenya, the kidnapping of Patricia Hearst in 1974 by members of the Symbionese Liberation Army, the suicide of the Baader-Meinhof gang in Stammheim prison in 1977 and the kidnapping of Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro by of the Armenian Red Brigades in 1983. Revolutionary Army attack on the Turkish ambassador in Lisbon, 1984 bombing of the Grand Hotel in Brighton by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (Poland, 1988), 1972 kidnapping of Israeli athletes during the Olympics of 1972 held in Munich, so members of Black September realized that the world's major media organizations would be present at the event and would decide to exploit the incident to gain attention.
