Kit airplanes are very dangerous to transport and there is information to prove it. Although kit airplanes are easy to obtain, there are specific rules and regulations that a person must follow. Even though there are some guidelines to follow, there are still many accidents that end tragically due to kit planes. Flying a kit plane should require a special license and the people building it should go through a simple training course to learn how to fix small malfunctions that may occur and also to learn how to fly a plane properly. If people were required to take a course to teach these simple things, then the percentage of wrecks occurring in home-built airplanes would be greatly reduced because pilots and manufacturers would have more knowledge on the subject. Buying a kit airplane and building it is something that is easier than a person would expect. After you order a plane kit, it comes “Where the initial metal shaping is done by the manufacturer, but all assembly is done by the owner” (manufacturing process). This way the owner is able to successfully complete the aircraft without having to worry about shaping and stamping the sheet metal to form the aircraft body. Building an airplane became quite simple and, over time, Stewart McDougall documented his steps in building a kit airplane and according to him, "The equipment used in assembly was a mixture of hand tools and some machines such as belt sanders" (production process). This just goes to show how kit airplanes are something that is always being made easier to build and create. Building an airplane requires many hours of labor and labor "the labor for assembly was approximately 540 hours of labor" (manufacturing process). Even though it seems like a lot, I... middle of paper... it's about the good, people seem to only want to report on the bad. This became very evident during this research: not all kit airplanes have failures, and journals of successful home-built airplanes have been published. Flying a home-built plane is a risk some people are willing to take. Although many safety precautions have been taken to reduce the number of accidents, this is not always the case. As more and more people choose home-built aviation instead of general aviation, the number of aviation accidents continues to increase. The only way to stop the increase in failures would be for the FAA or some other flight education program to provide a course for future operators of home-built aircraft. This will greatly reduce the number of wrecks and casualties and may one day even make flying home as safe as flying on a general aviation plane..
