First Draft===========This poem is set in the 19th century. There are three main characters in the story. Cousin Kate, the cottage girl and the Lord. The title of this poem is self-explanatory. As you can see, the poem is based on a character called Cousin Kate. Since she is the protagonist of the poem, the entire poem revolves around her. The poem is based on triangular conflict, which means there is a conflict between three people. The poem basically tells us about 19th century life and people's attitude towards illegal relationships. The poem tells us about a country girl who had an affair with a gentleman. She loses her virginity to him and then regrets the whole ordeal. In the 19th century, if you were not known as pure, your friends and family would reject you. It was considered unclean and impure to have sex before marriage. Men would then look down on you with disgust, as would friends and family. The poem demonstrates how a man can love a woman, then throw her away and move on to another as he pleases, and because he was a lord the hut girl could say nothing. This highlights the difference between people from the upper and lower classes. If the peasant had said something, people would not have believed her and would have turned a blind eye to her and her accusations. Stanza 1 portrays the introduction to the poem. The issues raised in these two stanzas show that she was "drawn" by the lord. This tells us that he dragged her in like an animal luring its prey, waiting to attack its victim. At the beginning of verse 1 he tells us that he is happy with his life. According to the introduction he works in a cottage and is happy with his life. According to this she is "satisfied" with her companions. He is happy with his friends and is completely happy with his life. Then he goes on to say "because a great gentleman discovered me". This tells us that among all the workers, or among all the girls that the lord knows, the servant of the hut was chosen. The beginning of the poem is written in the first person and continues this way throughout the poem. The structure of this stanza is written in first person meaning it is written from his point of view and shows his feelings and no one else. The language used is that of the early 19th-20th century; gives the impression that happiness leads to sadness.
