Socrates was born around the year 469 BC and during his lifetime became one of the best-known philosophers in the world. According to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, much of the information known about Socrates is second-hand; this is because he never wrote anything, unlike many other philosophers. The known information most likely comes from the writings of his most famous student, Plato. Socrates' teachers are unknown, although many believe that he derived his ideas from the teachings and doctrines of Anaxagoras and even Heraclitus. According to “The Window: Philosophy On The Internet, Philosophers,” “Socrates is described as having neglected his own affairs, instead spending his time discussing virtue, justice, and piety wherever his fellow citizens gathered, seeking wisdom about right conduct in so that he could guide the moral and intellectual improvement of Athens.
