Topic > Merging Two Religious Worlds - 832

I was born and raised as a Seventh-day Adventist. Growing up I studied the beliefs of my denomination side by side with those of other common denominations. I realized that despite the many differences between religions, there are also many similarities. One of the most common religions compared to Adventism is Catholicism. Both religions actually share some common beliefs. But most people only focus on the differences. Regardless of the different doctrines, Seventh-day Adventists and Catholics have a strong bond because of their belief in God. One of the major doctrines that distinguish Adventists is the observance of the Sabbath as the Sabbath. They observe the Sabbath as the Sabbath because in the Bible it says: “And on the seventh day God finished the work which he had done, and rested on the seventh day from all the work which he had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it he rested from all the work that God had created and made” (The Holy Bible, Gen. 2.2-3). Looking at the calendar you can see that the week starts on Sunday and ends on Saturday. This would make Saturday the seventh day. Following the Sabbath is Adventists' way of thanking God and reflecting on His creation of the world. The Sabbath is also a time to turn to God with whatever ails you. There is not a passage in the Bible that states the change of the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday. In this way they are left with the same Sabbath that God established at the beginning of the world. On the other hand, the Catholic Church observes Sunday as Saturday. They keep Sunday as Saturday because every Sunday should remember Easter Sunday. Easter Sunday is important to them because it symbolizes… the medium of paper… confession of sins is important. In the whole scheme of things they actually have more similarities than differences. So, perhaps next time they find differences in each other's beliefs they should try to focus on the similarities instead. Works Cited The Holy Bible. Nashville: Nelson Bibles, 1982. Print.
