Topic > The SAT: A Pointless Nightmare for Students - 1224

Driving to Ferguson Senior High that morning I felt like I was driving to my imminent death. I'm sure my classmates would agree too. Waiting online to enter the building is a mix of emotions between nervousness, tiredness and stress. Then hearing the inspector say "go!" and it's a race against time and your future! Only one acronym has the ability to make any high school senior cringe: SAT. The exam will be the most nerve-wracking four hours of your life. The silence of the room, the pronounced ticking of the clock and the frenzy when the monitor says there are five minutes left. This anxiety will consume you and make you empty if you don't prepare properly. Believe it or not, the only thing worse than taking the SAT is waiting three weeks for scores to post online. In the few seconds between clicking a button and seeing your scores on the screen, you experience a range of emotions; from fearful, nervous, confident and fearful again. Students might argue that the purpose of this exam is to dash your hopes and dreams, perhaps even bring your self-esteem down a few notches. However, according to the College Board website, the SAT serves as a way for colleges and other institutions to measure your potential abilities in college. To put it bluntly: your future depends on these scores. The SAT should be based on a scale that will allow every student to showcase their potential for success regardless of socioeconomic status. Many colleges use it to determine which students will receive financial aid, as well as qualify for other opportunities such as honors programs. This explains why students might spend thousands of dollars on private tutors, prep materials to test and prepare...... middle of paper ...... or across the country, we will set our alarms for midnight in hope that when we see our scores we can be satisfied with them and enjoy the happy fact that we will never have to suffer from this nightmare again!
