The Lord of the Flies character is quoted as saying, "You knew that, didn't you? I'm part of you? Shut up, shut up, shut up! I'm the reason it's wrong ? Why are things the way they are?" (143). This quote ties into many of the predominantly dark themes suggested by some readers. They use this quote to show that darkness is a part of everyone, along with other evidence throughout history that seems to indicate that corruption of character is an inevitable condemnation simply for being human. Yet, if darkness is so innate among human beings, then goodness must be so too. Because there is no darkness without light, they are two opposing forces that balance each other. And if such an overwhelming, all-consuming darkness has always been in every human being, doesn't it make human achievements that much more impressive?
