Topic > My Interview with Our School Psychologist - 709

I had the opportunity to interview the school psychologists on our campus. He currently holds a master's degree in psychology and has worked for the district for 10 years now, 3 of which have been here. Discussing what she does on a regular basis, she explained how she reaches out to contacts within the community to help parents and children with unresolved issues and help them find answers. Create businesses that help cultivate a better lifestyle for these families. I discussed these events with her at length and she described them as a social environment conducive to greater quality in learning, social interaction, and family lifestyle. The reason we planned these events on our campus is due to the lower demographics and the campus being considered a special class of schools known as Title 1 that receives more aid than other campuses. When asked about her daily routine, she explained that when someone notices abnormal behavior she calls students into her office to talk to them and find out what's going on. Then work with the social worker, school resource officer, administration, and parents to resolve these issues. This is what he dedicates most of his time to, with a small portion devoted to community events. As I followed her for a couple of hours of my day, what we were able to do was address the problems of students who ranged from young teenagers who had social problems (boyfriend/girlfriend) to students who had troubled home lives and they needed assistance. Another area she focuses on a bit is helping pregnant teens prepare for motherhood and the responsibilities associated with raising a child. In the 2012-2013 school year there were more than 8 teenagers... halfway through the paper... and the requirements for the master's degree. I have been researching a few other positions within our school board that require the degree I am pursuing. While I have not been able to find a comparable position within our school district, there may be other positions with other counties or outside employers that may need to be filled. Some of the positions I sent resumes to that had positions listed were state correctional facilities for children, behavioral health facilities, other school districts in nearby counties, and private employers. One downside to the job search is that my wife and I have all of our family here locally, so moving will be the last option for us. Ideally, the best option would be for me to interview and fill a position within our district where I am established and known not only by supervisors but also by the students I serve.
