Every day, in our lives, we have rules to follow. When we don't follow the rules, we face consequences. For example, if a person speeds, they may be caught and pay a fine. Middle school students grow and learn. They should not be expected to follow every rule as soon as the rules are introduced. It takes time and training for students to learn. With time and structure students will develop self-discipline. Teachers must be consistent when teaching classroom rules and procedures. These rules and procedures must be taught, rehearsed, and reinforced. When students choose to follow the rules, they will face positive consequences, and when they choose to break the rules, they will face negative consequences. Negative consequences should be gradual and preserve students' dignity. They should be logical and natural. At the intermediate level, students should see the relationship between the rule and the consequences for breaking it
