Topic > Why Men Are the Way They Are by Warren Farrell

Warren Farrell was born in 1943 and became an American educator and author of seven books on men's and women's issues. In the 1960s she began her research on gender issues focusing primarily on the feminist perspective, but in the 1980s she thought men were being misrepresented. In the 1990s this sentiment began to grow and although his book Why Men Are the Way They Are (published in the 1980s) was an award-winning best seller, he published The Myth of Male Power to address misinterpretations of men. He is the only man to have been elected three times to the Board of Directors of the National Women's Organization in New York, and his books are published in more than 50 countries and in 15 languages. Farrell's other book, Why Men Earn More: The Surprising Truth Behind the Wage Gap — and What Women Can Do About It, was selected by U.S. News and World Report in 2006 as one of the four best career books . Warren has appeared on over 1,000 television and radio programs and has been interviewed frequently by Oprah and Barbara, as well as Larry King and Peter Jennings. Farrell said that despite all his successes, "his best moments are at home" in Mill Valley, California, with his wife Liz and two daughters. Why do men earn more than women? Men work longer hours in more dangerous and unpleasant jobs. They accept night shifts and the risks of the job more easily. Women librarians earn less than street cleaners, not because of discrimination, but because so many applicants strive for harmless, cool, relaxed and practical completion, the occupation that women prefer. Men earn high-demand engineering degrees, while women earn degrees in French literature. Warren Farrell insists that women and men with th...... middle of paper ...... then it would be no easy task to get these and similar jobs. I so agree, though, that instead of belittling men because they earn more, we should admire them for their willingness to do hostile but necessary jobs that few women will do, like roofer, coal miner, and prison guard, often ending up prematurely in the grave. • Farrell, Warren.
