Torture is the act of inflicting severe pain or suffering, mental or physical, on an individual to obtain information, intimidate, or punish. Torture is expressed in many ways, for example rape, forced labor, electric shock, violent beatings, etc., and for this reason it is considered cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. Therefore, it is a violation of human rights and is strictly prohibited by international law. Michael Davis and many other individuals have stated that torture is worse than murder. He states: “Both torture and premature death are very great evils, but if one is a greater evil than the other, it is certainly torture.” That said, there are three main reasons to discuss why torture is not morally acceptable. However, in many cases it is considered very beneficial, but the disadvantages outweigh the benefits. Firstly, bullying is a form of torture, but to a lesser extent, where the individual suffers from low self-esteem, suicidal thoughts, self-harm, etc. Furthermore, torture is primarily used as a means of obtaining information, however, it is an ineffective interrogation tool where the data provided could be falsified. Finally, torture is sometimes used to violate the individual's autonomy, i.e. the right to freedom and independence, by forcing the victim to succumb to the torturer's way of thinking. To clarify, bullying is a form of torture because it involves the infliction of pain and suffering on individuals. Humans have the ability to imitate what they see and hear in their environment, believing it to be acceptable. However, imitating violence seen on television or from family members is a result of why bullying has become more prevalent among… middle of paper… wise. Every religion should be accepted, whatever it entails. Works Cited “Torture is wrong.” Quotes. Np, nd Web. 28 February 2014. “Torture.” Torture. Np, nd Web. February 28, 2014.Miller, Seumas.
