The Dynamic Duo in Volpone Although Mosca and Volpone, the "dynamic duo" in this play, share many similarities, they are still different enough to complement each other. On the one hand, both characters are similar in that they share a common lust for deception, making a living by deceiving others. They delight in conjuring and executing elaborate schemes to deceive people. This becomes a game for the two of them, which they both enjoy immensely. Perhaps the common love for this game is what unites Volpone's heart so closely with that of Mosca. On the other hand, Mosca seems to be a little sharper and wittier than Volpone. Where Volpone tends to be a bit dull or slow, Mosca makes up for his lack by being resourceful for him. For example, in act 3.4, Volpone seethes with frustration because he cannot successfully persuade or trick the would-be Lady into leaving his presence. This unerring ability of Mosca to come up with schemes while under pressure is what makes him so useful to Volpone and keeps the duo together. Mosca's quick thinking compliments Volpone's slow wit. Another trait that Mosca has in abundance that Volpone doesn't necessarily have is the ability to flatter. Throughout the show, Mosca displays a deft ability to exploit the pride of others by inflating their egos so that they are consumed by his own vanity. So once the other person has their eyes focused solely on themselves, they are vulnerable to falling for any of Moscow's plans. This cunning character plays this game of flattery with almost every character in the play, including Volpone. Since Volpone is not witty enough to see that his partner treats him with the same cunning that he uses with customers, he is
