Topic > College Tuition Increase - 736

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, college tuition and related fees have increased 893% (“College Costs and CPI”). 893% is a very discouraging percentage considering it exceeded the increased costs of Medicare, food and housing. As America tries to emerge from the recession, many students are seeking higher education so they can obtain rewarding jobs. However, their vision is tarnished by the dire rise in college costs. College tuition is rising above inflation. Such an immense increase in tuition has many serious implications for students; for example, fewer students attend private universities, fewer students remain enrolled in college, and fewer students work in the fields in which they specialize. As the high school chapter comes to an end, many students must make a decision that will affect the rest of their lives. Hopefully, for many, the decision is to enroll in college and obtain a higher education. However, with rising tuition costs, students must reconsider their options for a better future. A community college is the second choice for many because it is the least expensive option. From 2007 to 2009, community college enrollment increased 24% (“College Costs and CPI”). Students do not choose a college for educational purposes because they are overwhelmed by financial problems. They are attending community colleges so they can graduate with less debt. Some seniors want to attend a particular college their entire lives and work toward this goal during elementary school; however, they are hampered by skyrocketing tuition for that college. Students should be able to attend a private university if they meet the student mentality of aspiring for jobs with which they will be able to repay their large loans. Students are not looking for their passion but rather an apathetic job that society imposes on them. America's future lies in its youth, and building a youth that is educated and interested in their careers would benefit society. Rising tuition is hurting American higher education. The greater the financial pressure on these kids, the more they are unable to focus on their goals and dreams. While inflation is a problem, students who manage to graduate will benefit society if they care more about their jobs. They should be able to fulfill their duty in society and an increase in tuition fees will substantially hinder this vision. Works cited "University costs and CPI".
