As Steven Spielberg once said, "documentaries are the best way to educate an entire generation" (Azevedo, 2013). In Morgan Spurlock's documentary Super Size Me, the public is informed and shown the dangers of consuming fast food on a daily basis. Spurlock has a camera follow him for a month as he consumes McDonald's for every meal, thus exposing himself to the unhealthy effects of the lifestyle. Based on images, interviews and statistics, viewers are informed about how processed fast foods begin to affect people from a young age. This documentary-style film shapes the viewer's perception through the use of visual and narrative techniques. Morgan Spurlock's film Super Size Me is representative of the idealized version of film known as the documentary style due to its formal properties and structure. At the beginning of the film, the audience is shown a group of children singing about turkey, fried chicken, Pizza Hut, and McDonald's. The camera moves unsteadily allowing you to immediately see that it was filmed with a handheld camera. Just like the first scene, the doctor's appointments, trips to McDonald's, and interviews are all recorded via a "handheld camera [with] live synchronized audio" (Cornell, lecture #12). Before Spurlock begins his month-long McDonald's diet, viewers are introduced to the reason for the experiment. His "topic position" on fast food takes into account global obesity statistics (Cornell, Lesson #12). Various facts and figures are read to viewers through voice-over narration as they watch multiple shots of obese men, women and children. Audiences learn that 100 million people in the United States are overweight or obese, one in four America… half of paper… use of visual and narrative techniques. Spurlock follows a hand-held camera for a month as he follows a strict "McDiet" in which he eats and drinks only products sold by McDonald's. As a documentary, Super Size Me, incorporates many different elements of the style, including filming people in uncontrolled situations, removing prejudice and provoking responses. The film manages to reach a large audience as it denounces and informs about the dangers deriving from the regular consumption of fast food. Works Cited Azevedo, Luís.
