“Three things cannot be hidden for long: the sun, the moon and the truth.” Buddha. In the book The Great Gatsby the theme is that many people have something that they are not completely honest about. In The Great Gatsby not everyone tells the truth. Many people are hiding something, whether it's a relationship or feelings towards someone. For example, Tom had an affair with Myrtle and was married to Daisy. In this article I will show some examples of all the lies that happened in The Great Gatsby. Tom had a couple of big lies in the book The Great Gatsby. One was when he went behind Daisy's back and had an affair with Myrtle. He also told Myrtle's sister that they couldn't divorce because Daisy was Catholic. But another of Tom's lies was when he told George Wilson that it was Jay Gatsby who was driving that car and not Daisy. The result of this lie was the death of Jay Gatsby and that is why I think it is so important. The quote is on page 140 and says, “Listen,” Tom said, shaking him slightly. “I just got here a minute ago, from New York. I was bringing you that coupe we talked about. That yellow car I was driving this afternoon wasn't mine, do you understand? I didn't see him all afternoon. Jay Gatsby was also a great liar. He lied about where he went to school, he lied about his family and childhood, and he lied about how he earned his money. He lied to Daisy and everyone else about his past and how he grew up. He did this to impress Daisy because she would never marry a poor boy from Minnesota like Jay Gatsby was. He wanted everyone to believe that he was the “American Dream”. The quote was found on page 98 and it's pretty much just a big speech what Nick is saying...... middle of paper......, cheeky smile aimed at the world and yet fulfilling the demands of his tough , jaunty body. ”The examples shown here in this essay show the effects of lying and how it can lead to death. Jay Gatsby was so caught up in being the "American Dream" and catching Daisy that he put his own life in danger by lying for Daisy. Myrtle wanted to get rich so badly that she put her life in danger and ended up dying just to be with the man who had the most money. Tom had to lie to Daisy to hide his affair with Myrtle. Jordan lied about moving the ball to win the golf championship match. Nick lied to help his friend when his friend got into trouble. However, his lies didn't help much because karma is not a great friend. All these points prove that many people have something that they are not completely honest about. Works Cited The Great Gatsby
