Electronic health record (EHR) systems are essential for changing the quality of health and managing the delivery of healthcare, whether in a huge healthcare system, a hospital or a clinic primary care. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has developed and perpetuates to maintain a strong EHR called VistA - Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture. This system was designed and developed to strengthen a high-quality medical care environment for military veterans in the United States. The VistA system is maintained today in hundreds of VA medical centers and outpatient clinics across the country. Facilities range from small clinics that provide exclusively outpatient care to generously large medical centers with major inpatient populations and their associated specialties, such as surgical care or dermatology. These systems consume clinically relevant record keeping which is improving patient care by improving clinical and administrative decision making.
