Throughout Kazu Ishiguro's novel Never Let Me Go, he chooses to represent children as strangers to the world, which may be aided by the setting in the British countryside because it helps give a sense of distance from true reality. In the framework of his novel Ishiguro focuses on three main characters Kathy, Ruth and Tommy. Others see these three students as having an advantage because they were fortunate enough to be raised in Hailsham by guardians. Under the watchful eye of the Guardians, the children were able to get used to being different from others. This can be seen as all the characters mature and grow after leaving Hailsham and becoming accustomed to life in the cottages. The newfound freedoms in the cottages lead them to question many of their previous school standards and beliefs. These freedoms can be seen by every student who seeks to maintain their sense of individuality through small, casual collections. This suggests that humans attempt to create an appearance through their possessions and incorporate them into their lives. Hailsham students are encouraged to look for creativity and individuality in the things they create, which might include sculptures, paintings or poems. These many collections that each student keeps close to them offer them a little control over their lives because they can choose the pieces they would like to incorporate into their individual collections. While attending Hailsham students vigorously try to fight for the best art to have their works selected for the 'gallery', which is a large collection of their best works that is shown to the outside world. In response this changes students' view of their o...... middle of paper ......d. The importance of art is exhibited throughout this novel. Hailsham students are seen to gain a sense of identity through art while their art may also reveal their souls. Hailsham students place great importance on artistic creation in order to make their identities observable. These students maintain a sense of individuality through their small collections and by continuing to strive to create works of art that are meaningful to their lives. In response, the finds brought much-needed funds to Hailsham before the Morningside scandal shed a negative light on the clones. The scandal basically lost the funding needed to keep schools like Hailsham running due to fears that these students were getting smarter and replacing the general population.
