Typically ecofeminism is associated with liberal feminism, but does not believe in the equality of both men and women. “Ecofeminists do not seek equality with men as such, but aim for the liberation of women as women,” ecofeminists argue that women and nature are culturally linked to each other. Linguistically and symbolically feminists are akin to ecological issues and can help reshape them. Ecofeminists believe that the association with women and nature is the root cause of sexism and naturism throughout the centuries. “…I disagree about whether women's connections to nature are primarily biological and psychological or primarily social and cultural” (Tong 252). Even ecofeminists disagree on whether women should emphasize or reconnect with nature. Those outside the ecofeminism camp believe that women should maintain their connections to nature. “Simone de Beauvoir urged women to 'transcend' their ties to nature to overcome their status as the other, or second, sex” (Tong 252). Nature ecofeminism pushes the idea that the nurturing, intuitive, and caring nature of women is what can drive cultural reconstruction. “…implying that traditional feminine virtues, not traditional masculine virtues, can foster better social relationships and less aggressive, sustainable lifestyles” (Tong 256).
