What is the relationship between media use and academic performance? Technological advancements have made so many conveniences available to humans around the world. Among the many advances that have been made, social networks have become a widely used technological method that allows for many avenues of networking. The empirical research experiments within this study observe a variety of scholars of different ages, races, and genders. The methods used were very practical and produced results that supported the hypothesis. Researchers predicted that not only does Facebook and other social networks impact how emerging adults interact, but also the negative effect they have on academic performance. The results supported and identified key concepts of these researchers' hypothesis. Facebook facilitates expansive social networks that grow across distant types of relationships (Manago, Taylor, & Greenfield, 2012). The findings also include that social networks may have a correlation and relationship with poor academic performance. Jennifer Walsh and others conducted a study in 2013 titled Media Use and Academic Achievement of Female College Students: Results from a Longitudinal Cohort Study. There was a larger portion of this study in which these participants were included. The study covered health-related behaviors and relationships, but the main study focused on media use and academic performance. This study was an example of the most common type of descriptive survey research. The researchers conducted a longitudinal study, in this case a within-participant design because the same sample of respondents is questioned more than once. The independent variable was media use and the dependent variable was grade…half of the paper…depart from the original paper and there was no exaggeration. The press article also included a limitation of the current study mentioned in the journal, along with additional implications for further research. In conclusion, the results of this study provide some excellent insights into the relationship between social media use and academic performance. While two forms of popular social media use – new media and old media – have been tested alongside academic performance, researchers can infer that they are linked. On the other hand, this will not be true for all scholars who frequently use social media. Furthermore, this study serves as a general understanding and foundation of the relationship between the two variables. Past research, this research, and other research to follow will serve as a general basis for the effect social media use has on academic performance.
