Topic > Humans live in harmony with nature - 1982

There is no better example of humans' relationship with nature than the idea of sustainable development. It is imperative that we develop sustainably if we wish to live in harmony with nature. Unfortunately we are developing in the opposite direction. For many years the West has been able to get away with using more than its fair share of resources because less developed nations lack the technology to use these resources for themselves. If this trend were to continue, it would pose a serious problem for global sustainability. The rapid development of nations such as India and China has pushed up levels of resource consumption, bridging the gap between the third and first worlds. With such a high rate of consumption in developed countries, there is not much room for the third world to develop without depleting our resources to unsustainable levels. The entire world cannot live the same expensive life that many developed countries enjoy. If nothing is done, the South will reach Western consumption levels and we will no longer be able to sustain life for generations to come. After studying this problem it is evident that the best solution is to develop the West to a level of sustainability that is universally applicable and allows less developed nations to eventually live the same lifestyle as the West without compromising the livelihoods of generations future. This essay will go on to explain how the Western lifestyle is not a viable option for everyone and how developing nations are already following the path of these Western nations. Western Ways The alarming rate of consumption in the West does not receive the attention it deserves. With 22% of the world's population supporting us for a limited time, we are only halfway there. Conclusion It's only a matter of time before we start to see this problem become more and more serious. a reality. Developing nations are rapidly advancing to the Western level of development and this is in no way sustainable. If nothing is done there will be too many people trying to live the extravagant lifestyle of the West and we won't even have enough resources to accommodate them. We must ensure that already developed nations reach the sixth stage of post-material society before less developed ones reach the ground. When the less developed finally catch up with the West, the earth will be able to support us all much longer than if we all lived the expensive lives of modern Western citizens. It is much more beneficial to all humanity to allow all people to share a common level of development instead of having a double standard of living.
