The life of Dana The novel Silver Sparrow by Tayari Jones is the story of two families with the same father, a bigamist. Chaurisse and her mother Laverne, James Witherspoon's first wife, have no idea of the existence of the other family. Dana and her mother are part of her secret life, and take a backseat to the family they share their father/husband with. The novel features a wide variety of instances where the intersections of gender, race, or class influence a character's life. This novel shows how people's identities change throughout life and how it affects their interaction with other people in life. Dana is the daughter of James Witherspoon and Gwendolyn. However, Dana is just an object that Gwendolyn uses to keep James closer to her. Although he loves and cares for Dana, he always supports James's point of view on how Dana should live her life. He is responsible for how Dana's life turns out and how Dana reacts to difficult situations in life. Dana is in a volatile relationship with her boyfriend Marcus. Instead of complaining, she will prefer to conform to society's gender role that a woman is subservient to a man. Likewise, this behavior is evident in his mother's life when she is beaten by James. Also, her mother Gwendolyn puts a lot of pressure on Dana. Gwendolyn acts as if Dana is an adult but she is just a child. When Raleigh asks Gwendolyn to marry him, Gwendolyn asks little Dana for advice when she notes, "Dana, what would you say if Uncle Raleigh became your new daddy?" (139). This is a difficult question for a little girl who is struggling with emotional trauma with her real father who she deeply loves to understand. Also, Gwendolyn always tells Dana stories about her grandfather ending up with her after she left her first husband Clarence Yarboro (52). Not to mention that Dana is traumatized by the idea that in a relationship men tend to abandon women and leave them in desperation, which she gained from the stories her mother told about her grandfather abandoning her after he left the her first husband. Additionally, the way Gwendolyn handles James' decision to return to Laverne's arms really had an effect on how Dana handles the situation. Dana does not handle the situation logically and this leads her to visit James and ask him why he left his mother (339). Dana grows up as a replica of her mother and ends up having a daughter named Flora. Dana loves her daughter so much that she holds her close the same way Gwendolyn shows affection for Dana at a young age.
