Topic > The need for intercultural communication and respect...

Australia is a country made up of a diverse and multicultural population from different backgrounds and beliefs. In Australia there are issues of intercultural conflict in everyday life, as well as in work environments. Issues related to intercultural conflict include communication, cultures, religion, and nonverbal behaviors. Without an understanding of the conflicts, misunderstandings can occur in the broader community. Language can cause cross-cultural conflict in the workplace between workers as they may not understand what instructions have been given and miscommunication problems arise as a result. This could cause distress and conflict between people and will create division within the workplace. To overcome the problems of intercultural conflicts and resolve situations that may arise, workplaces should show acceptance and empathy towards the different cultures present in the community. As a population made up of a range of different cultures and backgrounds, society must be open and respectful of cultural differences and the attitudes of others. This allows all community members to belong and be accepted in a harmonious multicultural country. There are many issues that can cause intercultural conflicts in societies. These include language, religion, personal appearance, cultural norms, and nonverbal behaviors. As a society, accepting and respecting different cultures to understand the background they come from opens up new understandings of acceptance. Ignoring cultural diversity and believing in a dominant culture does not demonstrate respect and understanding of other cultures. Religion can be a very sensitive and personal choice/issue and in a work environment it can cause problems...middle of paper...and demonstrating empathy towards problems that may develop shows that people matter and enables them to feel a sense of belonging to a community.Works CitedAdcq.qld.gov.au. 2013.
