Poe in Contrast with SocietyEdgar Allan Poe's writing style can be compared and contrasted with modern society in many ways. For example, "Ed" often wrote about psychopathic (or psychotic) murderers who buried people in walls, as in "The Cask of Amontillado" (1) and in "The Black Cat" (2). You can read about these kinds of things that are really happening today by reading the newspaper. But on the other hand, Poe's style can also be contrasted with today's society. It is not very often that a crow or any other bird enters someone's room and says just one word to him before going and sitting on a bust above his door (3). But it is likely that Poe did not intend to take the poem literally. At least you wouldn't think he wanted to play it that way. You can never be too sure when dealing with a boy who married his fourteen-year-old cousin. But that's not the point. The point is that although the times and scenario have changed, Poe's works can still be connected to today's society. One way Poe's works can be connected to today's society is his description of characters. An example of this can be found in Poe's short story "The Black Cat."(2) In this story, the narrator begins by remembering a time when he was considered a "normal" person. Gradually, due to his alcoholism, he becomes less concerned about those around him, more irritable, more moody. Just as he described many years ago, people today, like the narrator of the story, drink alcohol and become irrational in thoughts and actions. Finally, when the narrator tries to kill his cat, his wife stops him and he buries an ax into her head. Fortunately, we don't hear about this type of murder that often. But people... middle of paper... people live in dark castles with the wind whistling through the cracks in the walls and around the windows. The point is that the settings of some of Ed's works differ from the times and places with which most people today are familiar. Considering all the things that are known today, it can be seen that there are many similarities and dissimilarities between Edgar Allan Poe's writing style and that of Edgar Allan Poe. society in the world today. This is a rather vague way of stating things, but it's true. One of the main similarities is the fact that the people Poe writes about actually exist, even if they aren't particularly numerous, depending on how you look at them. One dissimilarity is the setting. The world is not as dark as Poe makes it seem. However, it is not possible to tell a person whether Poe's works are more similar to today's society or not. This you have to decide for yourself.
