“You educate a man; educate a man. You educate a woman; educate a generation." (Young). This quote illustrates the importance of women in today's society and the crucial role they play in inspiring the next generation of young women. Feminism is a social perspective dedicated to equality and equal rights between both sexes, male and female. This social perspective has been and still is practiced by millions of feminists around the world fighting for equal rights. The feminist movement has gone through three waves in the last century, changing the face of the human race as we know it. It has changed social norms and displaced the norms and stereotypes of typical gender inequality rooted in everyday practices. In Canada we still need feminism because women are still considered less important than men in society, our culture is dominated by men resulting in the major contributions women have made to society being overlooked, and finally, women are misrepresented in the media, much less in the broader culture. Theories of gender inequality identify that women's place in society is not only different but also unequal to that of men. For centuries, men have enjoyed greater rights and privileges than women. The US Census recently updated the statistics stating that women earn 77% of what men earn and for the same amount of work. This statistic was updated as of last month, February 2014. This is just one major example of how women are treated less equally than men because they can work just as hard, if not harder, than men in the same job and yet receive about ¾ of the men's pay. Women also often find themselves facing the so-called "glass ceiling" when it comes to promotions. This is evident when examining the lack of women in le... center of paper... an example of how the media abuses the female body which should be the epitome of beauty but instead objectified. It is rare to see women portrayed as bright, intelligent and inspiring in any media source. Famous male singers who often appear on television such as Robin Thicke, Justin Timberlake and Usher have all released songs that address women in sexual matters. Famous musicians like these have a fan base of millions. Millions of people listen to music that objectifies women. This is why feminism is extremely necessary. With millions of people shaped by the media, feminists must fight back even harder and speak out louder. Canada needs feminism because there is still a lot of work to be done for women's rights and equality. Feminism can shape humanity as we know it and fight for women's equality.
