IntroductionThe University of Kentucky is the largest university in Kentucky, with 26,682 students enrolled² it is the largest employer in Lexington³ with more than 10,600 employees and is the ninth largest business in Kentucky , with an annual budget of more than $1.4 billion.¹ The HR department in the UK has around 110 employees.4 I decided to interview the two leading HR specialists: Kimberly P. Wilson, associate vice president of resources human resources and Mary Ferlan, chief operating officer of human resources. These two women took some time with me to review the University of Kentucky's human resources department, the HR organizational chart, and answered some questions I had about their positions. Background Kimberly P. Wilson, associate vice president of human resources, has been at the University of Kentucky since 2002. She began her career at UK as a human resources development manager. He was responsible for three training groups: Employee Development, Technology Training, and Operation Educate. In August 2003, she became chief of staff to the executive vice president of finance and administration, executing special projects and assignments as directed. Then, in March 2004, Ms. Wilson became the interim director of human resources, responsible for all aspects of university-wide human resources operations. Wilson has extensive experience in human resources management. Between 1994 and 2001 he worked for Reuters Group, PLC, holding various human resources positions. His position was vice president of human resources. He went on to become deputy director of human resources, based in London and then director of human resources for global sales and operations, based in Switzerland. Before leaving Reuters, she was deputy editor and director of strategy and human resources development in London. Ms. Wilson also served as director of human resources and vice president of human resources for Knight-Ridder, Inc (which owned the Lexington Herald Leader and currently owns the Bradenton Herald in Bradenton, FL.). He earned an MBA from Rockhurst College in Kansas City, MO and a BA from the University of Kentucky. Mary Ferlan, Chief Operating Officer for Human Resources, has been at the University of Kentucky since 1990. She began working as a wellness specialist, serving as assistant manager and Wellness Program manager. Mary then worked as an HR generalist and as an employee relations and unemployment manager within the UK HR department. She later became Chief Operating Officer of Human Resources.
