Knowing the warning signs of bullying can help students avoid thoughts of suicide, feeling worthless, or withdrawing. Bullying is “unwanted and aggressive behavior among school-age children that results in a real perceived power imbalance” (Stop Bullying Association). Statistics show that every year the death rate of victims of bullying increases. The Bureau of Justice School states that “46% of males followed by 26% of females admitted to being victims of physical fights.” Bullying statistics also show that approximately 77% of students have admitted to being victims of one type of bullying or another. As the statistics continue to increase each year, it is important for parents to be aware of the signs and consequences of bullying. Parents, students and staff should be aware of the difference between being bullied and being a bully. They should also be informed about different types of bullying. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, bullying can be committed verbally, socially and physically. Mortality rates would decrease if parents and teachers were more aware of all the signs of bullying. Making parents and teachers aware of the various signs of bullying could make a difference around the world. Parents should also know who is at risk of bullying and who is at risk of being bullied. The four types of bullying include verbal, social, physical, and cyberbullying. Each type of bullying has its own characteristics. All bullying is dangerous, but some types of bullying are more dangerous than others. For this reason it is important to know the different characteristics of each type of bullying. Verbal bullying, for example, has several characteristics. Verbal bullies are one of the most difficult types of bullies to... middle of paper... ask for help when they are being bullied. When students go to school, they always have in mind that they will be in a safe environment. The only way this can happen is for teachers to be aware of the signs of bullying and offer support on how to help stop bullying. Administrators should focus on the social environment of the school. “It is important to change the school climate and social norms around bullying (Hazelden Foundation, 2014).” They should also check the bullying assessment at school. Adults are not always very good at assessing the nature and extent of bullying in their school. Another good idea could be to form a group to coordinate bullying prevention activities at school. Bullying prevention efforts appear to work best if they are coordinated by a group representative of the school (Hazelden Foundation, 2014).
