Elie Wiesel was a normal child, due to his religion he was subjected to the harsh events of the Holocaust and today he inspires many with his story of how he survived. Ellie was born on September 30, 1928 in Sighet, Transylvania. His parents, Shlomo and Sarah had three daughters Hilda, Bea and Tsiporah and a son Ellie. Ellie was the third youngest of the four. His parents, Shlomo and Sarah, owned a grocery store in Sighet. His family spoke Yiddish at home, in public settings they spoke German. Ellie began attending Hebrew school at the age of three. His studies included classical and modern Hebrew and the Bible, later studying the Talmud. Ellie was very focused on her religious studies. In 1942 Wiesel celebrated his bar mitzvah.
