Feminist criticism has been presented by men throughout the past, up until the 1920s. Women were denied social power and had no voice. Their job was to clean, take care of their husbands and children. According to Donald Hall in his book, Literary and Cultural Theory, he states: “Language, institutions, and social power structures have reflected patriarchal interests throughout much of history; this has a profound impact on women's ability to express themselves and the quality of their daily lives” (202). Hall's theory is shown in The Awakening and "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin and "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. These three samples provide specific excerpts of feminist analysis of how they are enacted across the life course and are also seen simply as an object. Additionally, the women suffered from depression and were trying to overcome a stereotypical belief about women's roles.
