On an endless road of meadows and half-collapsed barns exists a picturesque town that lives its motto "The City of Progress". Enterprise, Alabama is stuck between miles of barren pastures and feed cows, but the peanut factory overwhelms your every breath. The monotonous journey has a reward, and it can only be found tucked away in a valley of small shops and Baptist churches on the main street downtown. It is a statue that commemorates this city's history of triumph over its struggling economy during the decline of cotton. Carved in stone, a woman presents an awl in honor of her efforts in destroying the crop, the cotton, the Enterprise, Alabama's main economic source. It is a common name given to an insect that infests cotton plants. Fully grown, they tend to be "reddish-brown, gray, or nearly black in color and are normally less than 0.24 inches long" ("What is a weevil?"). The muzzle originates from the face with two forked spurs that extend it further. weevils hibernate in the grass during the fall and will not reappear until spring ("What is a weevil?"). This small, cockroach-looking insect was responsible for the destruction of southern economies such as Enterprise, Alabama. The weevil's main food source is cotton plants, a crop that covered southern plantations at the time. In spring, when they come out of hibernation, they pierce cotton buds and lay eggs in them ("What is a weevil?"). After about four days the larvae are born. This is where most of the damage occurs. The larvae eat and destroy cotton fibers ("What is a weevil?"). The plant is tormented by these insects; they eat them until the final death of the cotton plant. The season of the awl allows that man... in the middle of the paper... to feel like he's done really well and worked really hard on his paper. The paper contained a little more sarcasm than I originally intended, but that was unavoidable given my topic. I had no problem writing it and I really enjoyed it. Works CitedChick, Weevil.
