Depression can essentially be treated using two types of treatment: psychotherapy and pharmacological therapy. Psychotherapy uses the combination of different techniques from different models such as psychodynamic therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy.1.3 .4.1: Psychodynamic therapy: Psychodynamic therapies focus on resolving the patient's internal psychological conflicts which are typically believed to be rooted in childhood (Debjit bhowmik, Kumar, Srivastava, Paswan, Dutta 2012). Therapists make extensive use of free association because psychodynamic theorists believe that depression develops in response to a loss; often a loss at an unconscious level (Comer, 1992). The therapist and patient discuss events that may have led to a loss and then interpret them accordingly. The interpretations are intended to provide the patient with insight into the anger towards himself that Freud believed was present in a loss that precipitates a depressive episode.
