Elie Wiesel, was born on September 30, 1928 in Sighet, Transylvania, which is now Maramures, in Romania in the Carpathians. He studied the Jewish religion before his family was forced to move to Nazi death camps during World War II. Wiesel managed to pull it off and later wrote the infamous book Night. He authored many books and became an activist and teacher while speaking out against persecution and injustice around the world. Eliezer Wiesel, who grew up with three sisters, continued his religious studies at a nearby Yeshiva. He was influenced by the spiritual beliefs of his grandfather and grandmother, as well as his father's liberal expressions of Judaism. Elie's mother is Sarah Feig and his father is Shlomo Wiesel. In 1944, Nazi Germany forced Jews living in Bulgaria, Hungary, and Romania to move to labor and extermination camps in Poland. When Wiesel was 15, his entire family was sent to Auschwitz.
