Conflict is one of the main driving forces behind a story. Without conflict the characters in the story would have no reason to do anything. For this reason every story requires some type of conflict in order to progress. The types of conflict can range from one man enduring the elements, known as man versus nature, or one character versus a larger group, man versus society. In addition to other conflict styles, the most recognizable and compelling one is when one character clashes with another, known as man on man. Kate Chopin's story "The Storm" shows three examples of man-on-man style conflict, Bobinot against his wife Calixtra, Alcee against Calixta and Alcee against his wife Clarisse, these show how non-violent conflict can occur between characters. The first example that a man versus man style conflict is shown is Bobinot versus his wife Calixtra. This conflict can be separated into two events, Bobinot while he is out in the storm and when he lets his son Bibi get dirty. In the first, Bobinot out in the storm, he is shown to have decided to stay in the shop until the storm is over. This is explicitly stated in the line "They were at Friedheimer's store and decided to stay there until the storm passed." Forced to stay inside the store due to the storm, Bibi then states that "mommy will be scared", which Bobinot agrees with, and buys a can of shrimp to comfort Calixta when she gets home. However, in the next The scene shows that "Calixta, at home, felt no uneasiness about their safety." The concern the two believe Calixta has for them, and their preparations to comfort her concern, is the basis of this part of the conflict between Bobinot and Calixta. The next part of their conflict is... middle of paper......h Calixtra arriving without warning or finding out would ruin their marriage. This shows that the conflicts between the two are those based on deception. Finally, “The Storm” by Kate Chopin is a story with a variety of conflicts. Bobinot's conflict against Calixtra demonstrated that conflict can be about relationship issues, such as one person caring about another or failing in their duties. Alcee's conflict with Calixtra showed a different side of relationship problems, both not wanting their partners to find out about their actions, and their guilt for committing the acts. The final conflict of the story, Alcee versus Clarisse, shows that deception can be another source of conflict, shown when Alcee sent a misleading letter to Clarisse. In conclusion, this story shows that conflict can occur even when there is no physical confrontation.
