The White House that is strictly political, and the White Houses that are both political and cultural. It becomes political when McKay says, “To hold me to the letter of your law” (Locke 134). This line refers to the law of the land, but what is fascinating about this line is that it is the word “thy.” Using your also makes it cultural because African Americans were not politically incorporated. This eventually became a cultural issue due to Jim Crow laws. One of the provisions of Jim Crow was the literary test. That if a person couldn't read or write, they ultimately couldn't vote (Ferris 2016). Therefore, since many African Americans could not vote based on cultural norms, then why would they follow American law if they were not given a chance?
