Topic > Effects of the Counterculture on Party Identification

Introduction In this article I will test whether the counterculture movement had an effect on party identification for young Americans between 1964 and 1972. I hypothesize that young Americans were more inclined to become anti-war due to the countercultural movement; which correlates with a decrease in the number of those who identify as Democrats. I believe there was a decrease in Democratic representation among young Americans because the Democratic Party was in power at the time. The emergence of this movement is due to many factors including: feminism, civil rights, the war in Vietnam and lack of trust in government. The counterculture consisted mainly of new journalism, protests, drugs and psychedelic rock. My hypothesis was proven true through analysis of Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Child" and surveys taken during this time period. To test my hypothesis I am using the song "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" by Jimi Hendrix from 1968 and data from the American National Election Study from 1964, 1968 and 1972. This song is full of sensory overload, or rather dynamization; which is related to the fight against the war in Vietnam and in return to the fight against the democrats. In the data, I use party identification as the dependent variable, age as the independent variable, and surveyed the years 1964, 1968, 1972 separately to analyze the before, during, and after effects of the countercultural movement. In this test I define young as between the ages of 17 and 24. Analysis of Jimi Hendrix's 1968 "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)". I believe that West Coast psychedelic music, such as Jimi Hendrix's 1968 "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)", played an important role in the Counterculture movement. This piece of music by Jimi Hendrix epitomizes the West Coas...... middle of paper...... Polls also indicate a decline in young Americans' partisan affiliation with the Democratic Party. Younger Americans declined 7 percentage points more than older Americans, which is not a large number, but is still significant in showing that the counterculture affects younger Americans more. It affected them more because they were more likely to join protests, go to concerts and take drugs than the older population. Alternatively, another factor to consider in this test is that other events may have influenced the results or that younger people were predisposed to react that way.
