Auteur Theory: From French New Wave to New Hollywood CinemaIntroductionAuteur theory originated in France and first mentioned by François Truffaut. When he traveled to the United States and was rehired by Andrew Sarris, he inspired a new generation of Film Academy graduate directors to create a new way of making films that became what we call New Hollywood Cinema. The following essay will be divided into two main parts. First, there will be a brief introduction to Auteur Theory in France and the United States. These include Truffaut's A Certain Tendency in French Cinema in Cahiers du Cinéma in 1954, On the Theory of the Auteur by André Bazin in 1957 and Notes on the Theory of the Author by Andrew Sarris in 1962. Secondly, a comparison of a film of the New Wave The 400 Blows and a The new Hollywood film, The Graduate, will be made from the point of view of The Auteur Theory. The discussion includes how the two films use characterization and open endings, jump cuts, and long takes differently than classic Hollywood films. The research question is how auteur theory impacts New Hollywood cinema and the difference between French and US auteurs, and finally, how new Hollywood balances between commercialism and auteur artistic expression . Radio, Film, Television by Andre Bazin, The Invisible Cut: How Editors Make Movie Magic by Bobbie O'Steen, Reel Power by Mark Litwak and the work of some other scholars will form the theoretical support of my theses.1. The French New Wave and the original theory of the authors From a historical perspective, the appearance of the French New Wave is due to the effects of the Second World War. When France was liberated by the Allies, filmmakers were once again free to liberate...... middle of paper ......m Classical Hollywood cinema is also a characteristic of New Hollywood. Although the techniques are similar, the way of handling stories is slightly different. The reason is that Hollywood cannot completely abandon the market, but continues to consider the artistic character of films. This is due to the second reason why television spread widely in the 1960s in the United States. The decline in the number of cinema spectators pushes Hollywood directors to reconsider market needs and redefine their position in the market. Commercialism will not disappear in Hollywood, it will only change its appearance and be reborn. That is, New Hollywood Cinema uses the Auteur Theory and at the same time considers the marketing factor. Because it is a perfect combination of commercialism and artistic, New Hollywood Cinema can be said to be a great success in the history of cinema..
