Topic > Are our correctional facilities the funding problem?

In today's society, we often have many suggestions to make to solve problems that we may not understand. One particular issue that I believe we should focus on is our correctional facilities. I believe the biggest problem when dealing with correctional facilities is the issue of funding. I believe that if we increase funding to our correctional facilities, we will see a better turnaround for employees, rehabilitating inmates, and a better quality of life. With low funding of our correctional facilities, we are missing out on tremendous opportunities. With the bane of having less money, we are losing many battles that can be solved by simply funding the facilities. According to a Channel 4 news report in Oklahoma, they said that "with little funding, they used 40-year-old locks on the prison cells." (Martin 2012). It's a problem that not only faces the staff, but also the staff. the community too. From the same source, Director Martin said that “a serious problem arose with the old locks. One offender managed to manipulate the lock on his cell door and we had a female officer working in the unit and he assaulted her. He had made some devices. The report said it was a rape kit. (Martin 2012) This warden also mentioned that with the low funding at their prison, (Dick Connor) they are losing quality employees who want to work here due to budget cuts. He said in the interview that "If staffing levels continue to decrease, the chances of inappropriate behavior by offenders will certainly increase and that would include attempting to escape. Public safety would be at risk." (Martin 2012) this is just one example of why we should find a way to increase funding for correctional facilities or prisons. When… half of the paper… prisons infrequently—to incarcerate an average daily population of 19,958—therefore amounted to $606.2 million, of which 3.5% were costs outside the correctional budget.” This is alarming because we citizens of Colorado are paying $606.2 million. I believe the solutions are endless when you have all the money. Unfortunately this is not what I mean when I talk about more funding for facilities. I believe that if we shifted budgets to other programs we could fund more facilities across the nation and reduce the population of incarcerated people. If we fund more things like this, we will also help reduce the national debt because we won't be borrowing money from other people. With the savings of the lower population we can then finance more things like education and healthcare. I think this is a particular way we should look at.
