When an animal is beaten, not only is it caused physical harm, but it can also cause serious psychological harm to the animal. Abuse can cause the animal to fear all humans, whether violent or not. The victim may not only be afraid of humans, but it may also make them hostile towards people and other animals. For example, if a dog's previous owner was violent, this may lead to the dog being aggressive towards others due to fear of being hurt as has happened in the past. A huge part of animal cruelty that people don't recognize is that the abuse of animals is linked in many cases to the abuse of humans. Animal abandonment is related to human abandonment, usually involving a child, elder, or other dependent (Animal Legal Defense Fund). In one survey, 71% of domestic violence victims said their abuser also turned their pet into a victim of abuse (Animal Cruelty Facts and Statistics). In a study completed in 1983, 88% of families investigated for child abuse took part in animal abuse along with the abuse of their children (Animal Cruelty Facts and Statistics). This cruelty not only affects the victims, but can also affect those who witness the violence. When someone is in the presence of violence against an animal or another person, it can affect the situation
