March 11, 2011, 2.45pm local time Japan, a day, an hour, a moment that saw what can be called the worst natural disaster for Japan – A magnitude 9 earthquake ruptured the fault line that extends 500 km along Japan's northeastern coast. This earthquake was the fifth largest in the world according to some reports by eminent scientists. The earthquake was followed by a gigantic tsunami whose dimensions were so overwhelming that the 18-foot-high tsunami walls near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant were literally "drowned" by waves that were, according to some horrified eyewitnesses, about 25 feet high. The death toll to date is not yet confirmed, as is the number of missing people. The capital Tokyo has witnessed swinging skyscrapers said to have been built with "earthquake safety" mechanisms. The previous paragraph is by no means an adequate account of the destruction that occurred on March 11, 2011 but it certainly gives an idea of the destructive power of an earthquake.
