In Plato's “Republic,” Socrates argues that education is critical to creating a just state and a just individual. Socrates offers different opinions on the amount of education an individual needs to be an auxiliary, a tutor, or a philosopher king. However, Socrates believes that the education of philosopher-kings makes them better suited to rule as just individuals. While I agree with Socrates about the role education should play, I disagree that the education of philosophers makes them better rulers than any other individual./Before we look at the role of education in a society right, justice must be defined. Socrates argues to Glaucon that "justice will be admitted in having and doing what is proper to a man and belongs to him." Socrates believes that being means, in short, minding your own business and not getting involved in the work of others. For example, Socrates states: "The opposite of [injustice], the autonomous behavior of each class, money-makers, assistants and guardians, each of these doing their own business in the city, would be justice and would make the city just" . An auxiliary should not be involved in the work of a guardian and vice versa. If each individual doesn't mind their own business, then the city is unjust. If each individual minds their own business, then the city is fair. In my opinion, the meaning of justice is more complex than simply “minding one's own business”. To me, justice is most closely related to fairness, meaning that no person should be treated as if they are above the law. Each person should be punished and rewarded according to their actions. My definition fits Socrates' definition that each person should be treated for who they are and fairly, even though... middle of paper... education is better suited to creating a just ruler than any other type of education. However, Socrates believes that a philosopher king's education makes him a more suitable ruler. Socrates defines justice as minding one's own business, while injustice is defined as the exact opposite. While Socrates argues that the guardian's education should mold him into a suitable ruler, he later argues that a ruler's education should not recreate an individual. At the same time he states that more importance should be given to “good” rather than nature. According to him this makes the ruler more suitable. In my opinion, he correctly states that a ruler must be good, but forgets to mention that he should also be taught how to deal with the political aspect of governing. In short; however, education plays an important role in creating a just state and a just individual.
