Sleep is a vital part of life. The body's many different functions depend on sleep to regenerate and grow. Various types of sleep disorders and parasomnias can interfere with sleep, leaving you feeling sluggish and sluggish. Many people live with sleep disorders that go untreated or undiagnosed, while others suffer from these disorders and cannot get a good night's sleep. Sleep disorders affect many people and can be easily treated. Other types of sleep disorders can be eliminated or lived with without affecting one's life. However, it is important to treat serious disorders to avoid suffering from lack of sleep. The brain and body function differently during sleep and waking hours. During sleep, energy is replenished and energy-saving organs repair themselves in the body. The brain moves new information into more permanent memory, and the cerebral cortex shuts down during slow-wave sleep (Brynie, 16). The frontal lobe is a part of the cerebral cortex and is the most active region of the brain during waking hours. It is also the part of the brain used for reasoning and decision making. A night without sleep will impair your understanding, concentration, creativity and problem-solving performance. Sleep is extremely important for the body and without it the body is unable to function properly. The roles of the body and brain during sleep are vital to repair and restore energy, create memories, and regenerate to function properly for another day of work. Sleep is especially important for fighting disease and for the growth and development of children. From ages five to seven, children develop REM and non-REM patterns as adults. That's because they start school... in the middle of the paper... er. Narcolepsy is characterized by sudden and unpredictable sleep attacks. Start with short periods of deep sleep, moving straight into REM sleep and skipping stages one through four. A person with narcolepsy will have vivid hallucinations and temporary paralysis just before falling asleep and waking up. They may also experience strong emotions. Narcolepsy cannot be cured, but there are stimulant drugs to help you stay awake. Naps can help relieve fatigue, and some medications can suppress REM sleep. REM sleep disorders such as sleep behavior disorder (RBD) may also need to be treated with medications. RBD is when a person acts out their dreams due to normal REM sleep paralysis not occurring. You will lose muscle control and hit, run, jump and kick. Treatment for RBD includes anticonvulsant medications that relieve RBD symptoms if they are severe.
