When people usually think of eating disorders, they usually relate them to women, however there is a growing number of men who struggle with this disorder. According to the most recently cited survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Los Angeles Unified School District, high school males are twice as likely to vomit or use laxatives to control their weight ( Alpert). Approximately 5.2% of recently employed participants are still dealing with eating disorders. The statistical numbers grow every day due to the media's portrayal of what body shape is a must have. There are movies like "Magic Mike" that influence men to use diet pills, vomit, and even starve themselves to have a body they consider acceptable in today's culture. According to the article written by Emily Alpert, boys are just as likely as girls to use diet pills, powders, or liquids. About 6.2% said they had used such substances recently, compared to 6.1% of girls. This percentage shows that in recent years, men are struggling with eating disorders in a similar way to women. Males believe that the less fat they carry shows a dominant status. It's not just about the unhealthy eating disorders themselves; there is severe use of steroids which also jeopardizes men's health. Males want to aggressively gain weight and be like today's muscular Sylvester Stallone or Dwayne Johnson. According to Emily Alpert, "Steroid use is also on the rise among teenage boys in Los Angeles, according to the survey, with about one in 20 saying they have used steroids (Alpert)." Steroid use is dangerous and is frowned upon in all sports, but even top athletes have been caught using them. Access to it does not seem challenging and but...... middle of paper ......to starve nor enter into a total intuition to receive help due to the bad characteristics that come from living at its internal. Erving Goffman predicted that these men with severe cases of the disorders would enter an institution to seek help and even lose their sense of self. On the other hand, George Homans would say that most of these males with eating disorders would have to weigh the costs and rewards because they should know better. I strongly believe that the studies of both these theorists are precise and very effective, especially for behaviors like the one I have chosen. Especially with the rise of eating disorders, Homans and Goffman would definitely dedicate a lot of time and effort to get more details on this social problem. Overall, these two theorists have prepared me well to help anyone going through life-changing issues, such as an eating disorder.
