Lawrence Sullivan Ross or more commonly known as Sul Ross was born on September 27, 1838 in Bentonsport, Iowa Territory. He was the second child and fourth child of Catherine Fulkerson and Shapley Prince Ross (Benner). In 1839, Ross's family moved to the new Republic of Texas where young Ross had his first encounter with hostile Indians (Benner). Talking about his education, Ross attended Baylor University in Texas for a year and then transferred to Wesleyan University in Alabama, where he earned his A.B. degree in 1859. From a young age, Ross showed his ambition to be a fighter Indian like his father. . Therefore, he didn't miss the opportunity when the opportunity to join the United States Army arose during a summer vacation during his senior year of college. Without a doubt, he signed himself as the leader of a group of Native American soldiers and participated in a campaign against the Comanche in Indian Territory. This was Ross's first experience of Army action. Ross was wounded, but won the battle and received much praise from regular army officers. Throughout his life, Ross dedicated his soul and time to the great state of Texas. He began to earn the love of the Texans when he joined the Texas Ranger and successfully recovered Cynthia Ann Parker from hostile Indians. Additionally, Ross also served in the Civil War by enlisting in the Confederate Army. Not only did he serve the military, Ross also served Texas politically as both a state senator and governor. Additionally, after Ross retired from politics, he was named president of the struggling Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas (Texas A&M University).
