Taiko Dan, representative of Japanese culture Taiko in Japanese means "big, fat drum" and generally means a Japanese drum ensemble. This is considered a form of visual art, music and performance that has brought great entertainment and promoted Japanese cultural values to audiences around the world. I was lucky enough to be able to attend one of the Taiko drumming shows of the Sacramento Taiko Dan group. This experience allowed me to use my critical thinking skills and left me with nothing but a positive impression. It had certainly proven that my initial stereotype about campus events was boring and very wrong. One day on my way to class, a banner about Taiko Dan caught my attention. Not only was the show free, but it was also very conveniently located in Union. Throughout my childhood, I immersed myself in manga, anime, cosplay, and Japanese films and this encouraged me to want to learn more about the culture and people. From my point of view, I saw the Japanese as a strong, independent and very proud people. I thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to attend this event and went without high expectations because I had never seen an art performance on campus before. The Taiko Dan show took place in a fairly small room and the spotlight was on the main stage. There were several drums sitting in row positions and busy drummers moved among them. They wore colorful Japanese clothes and accessories. I sat down with my friend and the show started. The group positioned themselves behind the drums and one member introduced the piece while the others got into position. The Taiko drum performance went on for about an hour and between each piece the drummers would change the… center of the paper… I would think critically without even trying. With such a positive experience from participating in Taiko Dan, I would definitely try other events on campus. The Taiko Dan show introduced me to the world of cultural art that Sacramento State offers its students. The performance allowed me to learn new information and exchange ideas and points of view with others. More importantly, this performance allowed me to put my critical thinking skills to use and really connect to what I learned in EDUC 10H. In particular, it drew attention to the tools that helped me analyze this performance such as curiosity, open mind, skepticism, analytical skills, communication and collaborative learning. They allowed me to form an opinion about the show and decide whether I would like to participate further in future events on campus.
