Frankenstein is a common story that most people know to some extent. They saw films and TV shows that alluded to Mary Shelley's creation, but they didn't capture it in its entirety. While reading the novel I came across several themes that are very important to the novel as a whole. Victor Frankenstein, a student of chemistry and natural philosophy, becomes obsessed with the "supernatural" and decides to dedicate all his time to finding the secret to creating life. After years of hard work, he finally manages to create life, but the monster he created is so horrible and miserable that he can't bear to look at it and runs away from the monster. Because of the rejection the monster faces from other people, he seeks revenge on his creator by killing Frankenstein's younger brother. Frankenstein, knowing from the beginning that only his monster could do such a thing, has only thoughts of revenge. In his encounter with the monster, the monster tells Frankenstein to make him a partner who would live with the monster so that he would not be alone. After denying this request the monster kills Frankenstein's best friend and wife. Frankenstein goes after the monster to defeat him once and for all, and that's when Walton finds Frankenstein, before Frankenstein can seek revenge, and ends up dying on Walton's ship. The first theme I chose was the role of the family. Victor, from an early age, tells again and again how lucky he was to have such devoted parents. “No creature could have more tender parents than mine” (Shelley 19). The reason for his education and his thirst for knowledge was due to his father and the sacrifices his father made to make him successful. “When my father became a husband and parent, he found his t...... middle of paper ......n to kill Victor's youngest brother, and Victor in turn seeks revenge on the monster. The monster wanted to create a companion, a person in whom he could feel part of a family. Revenge ultimately consumes them both and leads to their deaths. Revenge and family are two very different themes. With the importance of family comes the emotions of love, devotion, sacrifices, etc. With revenge comes hatred, retribution, retribution, etc. Family led to the beginning of Frankenstein (his family raised him, cared for him, educated him, etc.), and the beginning of the monster (he felt an emotion for the first time, the need a partner, learned from them, etc.). But ultimately both destructions were motivated by mutual revenge. Works Cited Shelley, Mary Wollstonecraft. Frankenstein. Ed. J. Paul Hunter. Second ed. New York: W. W. Norton &, 2012. Print.
