Georgetown University's National Center for Cultural Competence defines culture as "an integrated pattern of human behavior that includes thoughts, communications, languages, practices, beliefs , values, customs, courtesies, rituals, modes of interaction, and the roles, relationships, and behaviors expected of a racial, ethnic, religious, or social group and the ability to pass the foregoing on to subsequent generations (“NCCC: Curricula Enhancement Module Series”). it is a significant factor in who someone is and what they like. Culture says how to dress, how to talk, influences what you believe and also influences a person's role in society to culture? has shown that levels of physical activity or physical inactivity are consistent among members of the same cultural background. For example, children of non-Caucasian racial origin have a greater risk of overweight than children of Caucasian origin ("Influence of race, ethnicity). and Culture on Childhood Obesity: Implications for Prevention and Treatment" 2212). Many cultures rely on physical activity as part of their daily lives to survive, so these cultures participate in significantly greater amounts of physical activity than most of cultures in developed countries.Physical activity can be a way for members of a culture to bond with other members, effectively strengthening cultural cohesion. If physical activity is integrated into the actions and rituals of a culture, then that culture will reap the benefits. Cultures that do not strategically provide adequate amounts of physical activity are now exposed to disadvantages. Weight of the World. Dir. Brent E. Huffman. PBS. 23 September 2005.
