Topic > Racial Profiling in America - 986

In today's world we live in a highly media-driven way. The media can influence people's attitudes towards a certain direction depending on the circumstances. Racial profiling is a very sensitive topic that every individual can relate to. It is known as the inclusion of racial or ethnic characteristics in determining whether an individual is considered likely to commit a particular type of crime or illegal act. For example, the media has “essentialized” the meaning of terrorism destroying the sweet religion of Islam. The word essentialize means to combine complex terms into a single thought or image making it simpler. Because of racial profiling we view terrorists as any type of brown male. It is the society we live in and therefore we have no choice in dealing with it. What exactly does the term racial profiling mean? You could say it's about the consideration of race in criminal investigations. “For example, the popular term “DWB” means that blacks are more scrutinized and regarded when driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (Geek). It is also an imaginary state that comes to mind when thinking about a crime; we tend to think of African Americans as the cause of most crimes. It's very unfair to them, but this is the society we live in. Even though many “blacks” live in ghettos, it is unfair to link them to most crimes such as gang wars, shootings and thefts. The media contributes to 90% of these stereotypes (Geek). As in the inner cities, African Americans are criticized for their actions, while Latinos are blamed for most of the drugs 2
