Responsible Business Leadership In 2006, Indonesia's largest mud volcano was affected by the gas well drilled by PT Lapindo Brantas. According to Lapindo Brantas, Inc., the company focuses on oil and gas exploration and production in Indonesia, operating under a production sharing contract with the Indonesian government in an area known as the Brantas Block in East Java. (n.d.), the mudslide caused the closure of sixteen villages and three subdistricts that included factories and rice fields. It is also the reason why thousands of people have lost their jobs and homes, plus transportation routes have been distracted and caused traffic jams. Therefore, the number of refugees, unemployed, abandoned children, prostitution and school blockades is increasing. As stated by Lapindo Brantas, Inc, “Lapindo Brantas lives and thrives alongside the community in its areas of operation. Through building mutually beneficial relationships with the community, Lapindo Brantas hopes to provide communities with a better quality of life.” Personally, it is quite contradictory to what the company said because it still has hundreds of people who have suffered from the Lapindo Mudflow in East Java. Even though almost seven years have passed, these people have not received any compensation for this disaster. Furthermore, Lapindo said that the company was not to blame, as it blamed the earthquake on Yogyakarta, hundreds of kilometers away. One victim said he no longer believed the company and government would keep their promises since 2011. However, Lapindo paid 3 trillion rupees ($306 million) to victims in early 2013.
