For as long as America has had a country, there has been a constitution. And since there has been a Constitution there has been freedom and independence. One cannot exist without the other. Invalidating the Constitution would also invalidate our freedoms. Some would have us believe that in our ever-changing lives our constitution has lost its relevance; which is not as relevant today as it was 200 years ago. Tell that to those who seek the freedoms of the United States, to those who have never had such freedoms, to those who are persecuted for their beliefs, massacred because of their race, and silenced forever for speaking out against their governments . Yes, it may be an old document, but what it offers to its citizens, is a better alternative ever proposed and the history, the fact that it works to this day, is a testimony not only to its relevance but indeed to its very necessity. The constitution offers its citizens numerous benefits that include a stable basis for government, division of powers, limitations on government, individual rights, and the idea of popular sovereignty. The foundation of our government was intended to provide a stable infrastructure upon which governments and people could build. If necessary, governments that overstep their borders could be acquitted by the people. The Founding Fathers knew that government needed boundaries and limits on its power. To build the government dreamed of by the Founding Fathers, two safeguards were necessary. First, they divided the power of government into three separate branches. This allowed for division without hindering the government. While each branch retained some independence, the Founding Fathers also included allowances and b...... half paper ...... citizens' right to vote regardless of race or sex. This is another example of an amendment that works in favor of citizens. Sometimes in our history we create amendments, like the 18th Amendment, which banned the production and sale of alcohol, that we later regret. Since the people asked the government to repeal the 18th Amendment, the 21st Amendment was added. This amendment repealed the 18th Amendment and made it legal for citizens to produce and sell alcohol. Ultimately, this is why scholars call the Constitution a living document. It is fluid and changing. We the people have the ability to review and change our constitution to suit our modern society. The document is destined to grow and change just as we as a nation grow and change. The very fact that the documents change will only make the case for its relevance more effective and convincing.
