Characteristics of Hope In the morning the sun rises, clearing the cloud of darkness and bringing the radiance of hope among the people of the world. We all live day to day and are always hoping that something will happen or that something will happen. Hope is the essence of good storytelling and is among the most distinctive characteristics of literary fiction. In much literature, hope plays an important role in representing the feelings and importance of a specific work. Literature such as “A Worn Path”, “Wild Geese” by Mary Oliver, “September 1, 1939” by WH Auden, “Sall I compare you to a summer's day?” by William Shakespeare and “To Build a Fire”: The theme of hope portrays the meaning of a story or poem. To demonstrate a short story “A Worn Path” and its theme, first of all I want to introduce the main character who is the old black women named Phoenix Jackson. He had no one except a nephew who was very ill and had to go into town to bring him medicine. The journey he was on was very difficult indeed. Throughout the story, Phoenix shows the reader how difficult his journey was and how much he loved his nephew to take further steps forward without giving up. The author demonstrates “So he left the tree and had to cross a barbed wire fence” (367). This short story is an example of a kind-hearted person who does not lose hope that his grandson will recover. Phoenix Jackson is an older character, but presented in such a wonderful way that while reading the story the reader believes in his strength and hopes that he will reach the final destination. The quote "God watches me all the time" (369) inspired me a lot and I understood that this woman believes in God who will help her overcome difficult times...... middle of paper...... changes in the stream, bends and bends and log jams, and always noted precisely where he put his feet” (109). The reason why I chose this quote from the text is because I want to present the characteristics of this man and show that he was very intelligent and knew he was going in the right direction. And Jack outlines a setting “There was no sun nor hint of sun, though there was not a cloud in the sky” (106) that created a visual image of a place where an unnamed man was. It clearly illustrates the strong hope this man had when he fought against the cold desire to survive. Ultimately, hope has become a striking theme in the creation of literature. I have listed above many pieces of evidence from passages by famous poets and authors. In much literature, hope plays an important role in representing the feelings and importance of a specific work.
