The dream of the founding fathers of any political party in the world is for its members to share the same vision with them, follow in their footsteps and preserve their lasting legacy. These are of course what subsequent members of the party should uphold, especially when the vision and legacy face the challenges of their time. But when the opposite happens due to unexpected changes in the political equation, immediate changes need to be made in the party to avoid a colossal defeat during the elections. The founding fathers of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) in 2002 entered into a controversial informal agreement on the rotation (zoning) of strategic elective positions along the northern and southern axes of the country. Their aim was for the party to gain national acceptance from the country's different ethnic groups and, above all, to meet the agitation of the population of the southwestern part of the country. Now that the PDP had dominated the political atmosphere of the country; with relative national acceptability and no scores to settle with the people of any part of the country, the zoning agreement must be abandoned to create an egalitarian Nigerian state. With the demise of our beloved President Umaru Yar'adua, a northerner, and After the ascension of his deputy, Vice President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, a southerner, to the seat of power before the formal conclusion of the first four-year term of Yar'dua in 2011, the political equation was significantly changed. This incident had caused tension in the political arena, with conservatives, especially from the north of the country, insisting that the current president should not contest, according to the gentleman's agreement reached in 20...... middle of paper... ..s to meet the aspirations of 150 million Nigerians. Even though a non-PDP member may not care that much about the zoning agreement in the PDP, but it is important for Nigerians to put pressure on the party to do the right thing because no matter what happens The decision taken by the party will affect all of us. In light of the above, we must be ready to assert our influence on any issue that may directly or indirectly affect us as a nation. We must, as a matter of urgency, address other issues such as electoral reform and strict respect for the rule of law, zero tolerance for corruption and combat any form of anti-democratic tendencies on the part of our leaders. Finally, the cancellation of the zoning agreement is only one step forward in consolidating the gains of democracy in the country. We must take advantage of the current situation and push for the meaningful change we all believe in.
